"WHERE NO SHADOWS FALL" JADCD 1031 Works by: Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards, Barry Conyngham, Peter Platt, Eric Gross, Ann Carr- Boyd, Robert Allworth, Don Kay, Lawrence Bartlett, Dulcie Holland. Duration: 71.57 Tributes in music by 9 Australian composers to Eric Gross’s accompany four of Eric’s works. resulting in a kaleidascope of witty and heartfelt pieces of short & medium length. Works by the first four composers listed above were written for a farewell concert for Eric Gross on the occasion of his retirement as associate professor of the Music Department, Sydney University. A variety of instrumental works by Eric are also featured, including the appealing and inventive “Mandigar 1” (9’00”) given here by The Sydney Mandolin Quartet in a recording by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Other major works are Carr-Boyd’s piano suite on heavenly bodies “Look at the Stars”, (7’05”), and Kay’s “Dance Cameos” (9’05”) amiably rendered by the excellent Sydney Wind Quintet. The piece which gives the CD its title is Allworth’s 17-minute piano work written in memory of a friend who died in a car accident. Sculthorpe and the late Peter Platt offer, respectively “A Sun Song For Eric” and “A Thoughtful Piece For Eric”. From Conygham E.G. for a strings & wind quintet. From Edwards a Bagatelle for clarinet & violin. Overall, a delightful and approachable collection of music, and a tribute to one of Australia’s most gifted composers.
