Music is Power, July 11 2006
Reviewer: Local Boy
With a touch of Ryan Adams in his vocals and heavy dose of early Bob Dylan in his narratives and story telling style of writing, as well as a shot of Neil Young mixed in with Ray Lamontagne in the fullness of his overall sound and structure, Mat Gibson delivers a persoanl, emotional and intimate debut album. Matt mixes wistful thoughts with a caramel voice, and at the same time tells a story that is direct and from the heart, and retains the ability to mix this approach with a more direct rasping sound that retains its sweetness. Mat has added a stellar band to his arsenal, and now has the perfect opportunity to make the music press take notice - from years touring in the US and UK, there is no shortage of material to develop further. The overall sound is rounded and textured, but manages to retain a sense of rawness and innocence, the production is spot on.
